The magic and excitement that surrounds the Night-blooming cereus is contagious. Once you first experience the short-lived cycle of the Queen of the Night, with its delicate white petals, subtle aroma, glowing in the night, then to watch them fade as the sun comes up, you can’t wait to see the next bloom. As plants matures, year after year, the number of blooms in a night grows. I once had a cereus plant that would have 75-100 blooms in a night.

This stylized weaving is mean to capture the excitement as you watch the flower buds grow and start to open, knowing it is going to be a big bloom tonight.

Hybrid Wild Flowers 

This imaginary patch of desert flowers came from working with materials found on the streets of downtown Tucson. A bright pink wash cloth and nylon, draw string bag became the center of the color scheme. Other found fabrics were used, some were dyed or splattered with paint to create the desired palette. Embellishment includes intricate beading , embroidered details and trim from my studio stash.

I have been developing a sensibility for using materials in my work that are recycled and reclaimed. By utilizing an old favorite Asian style tunic from my own wardrobe it determined the color palette and set the stage for this Oriental style floral design.

Purple Prickly

Inspired by the Santa-Rita prickly pear, the color contrast of their blue-grey pads and the shades of purple make it one of the most colorful of the prickly pear cacti.

I enjoy embellishing my 3 dimensional desert botanicals with layers of stitch ing and a variety of beads that give that prickly texture and the patterns a sparkle.

The purple fabrics were dyed by hand. Back ground fabric was hand painted. The bronze colored prickers are beads made from dried seaweed. Other materials thread, glass seed beads, rick rack on hardware cloth.

Much of my work includes the themes and impressions of my home and my place in the Sonoran desert. When creating this stitched and beaded, 3 dimensional study of a Saguaro I included a bird hole. The hole called out to be inhabited so I created this Elf Owl to engage the viewer.

Materials included studio fabrics, ribbon, thread, vintage hand painted bugle& seed beads on hardware cloth.

The flash of the brilliant shimmering colors of a humming bird when it catches the light just right, was an inspiration to me. The emerald green of the Broadbill Hummingbird set the tone for this small 3 dimensional, sparkling desert tapestry.

I love the textures and colors of the Opuntia plant. Year round it is a favorite subject for me. The pokey spines, bright delicate blooms of spring, and the red juicy fruit of summer inspires me.

For this impressionistic piece, I began by hand printing and dyeing all the base fabrics. Then embellishing with lace, ribbons, trims, thread and beads I worked to created movement, texture, pattern and contrast in color.

This sculpture is made from a recycled vintage wedding dress, circa 1947, that was deconstructed, hand painted and combined with intricate beading and stitching to create this colorful explosion of color and texture.
